Tanay enjoyed the part Indian, part French cuisine, every bit as delicious as Mrs. Gopaul had promised. He was buzzing in anticipation of his proposed after-dinner chat with Mita. Hopefully it would end up being more than a chat. Hopefully she would listen to the needs of her body and give in to the attraction between them. Heck, strangers went to bed together for less!

‘Tanay, what are you doing for Mita’s birthday, Saturday?’

Radhika’s unexpected question caused both Mita and Tanay to stiffen. They hadn’t anticipated this one. Mita mentally kicked herself. They should have shared such basic personal information with each other.

Before Tanay could respond, Mita jumped in impetuously. ‘I won’t be here!’

‘What? Why ever not?’ her grandmother asked.

Mita flushed. She hadn’t meant to declare her plans like this, out of the blue, without preparing her family beforehand. So far Mama was the only one who knew she was thinking of going to India.

‘I want to travel,’ she said, as calmly as she could. ‘It’s my first vacation since I started working.’

‘That should be fun. Is it a school thing? Are other teachers going with you? Students?’

‘No Nani. It’s just a me thing.’

Tanay, sitting quietly by her side, noticed that Mita was beginning to get flustered. She was shredding her paper napkin and her foot was tapping nervously.

Mita knew it was going to be a bit of a battle. Nani was showing exactly the same signs Mama had shown when she had learned of Mita’s idea. The frown, the piercing questions, the voice dripping with concern. Next she would be talking about the dangers girls faced when they traveled to foreign countries alone.

‘So anyway,’ Mita continued gamely, keeping her tone conciliatory although she felt militant. ‘I’m off to India. I thought it would be a great place to start my travels considering Papa’s family lives there.’

‘India? But you don’t know a soul there!’ Nani exclaimed, her brow knit with worry.

Nana, bless him, took Mita’s side. ‘It’s only a holiday, Ruby. She isn’t emigrating!’

‘But a holiday alone? What fun would that be? She’d be forever worrying about…I don’t know…stuff!’

Uncle Raja, Maxine and Radhika kept studiously out of it. Mita was Ruby’s only grandchild. Ruby would fight to the death to keep Mita from imagined or real dangers.

‘I won’t have time to worry, Nani. I’ll be too busy getting to know my relatives, sightseeing, making new friends and what not.’

Tanay, also minding his own business, was impressed at the tenacity of the duo. The grandmother who raised any and every objection to the solo trip, and the grandchild who had an answer to everything.

This was a spur of the moment thing. It must be, considering that her beloved grandparents didn’t know about it. And that irritated him no end. Mita was thinking of running away. This sudden desire to travel had to be to escape him and the chemistry between them. Was she worried that it would replace her feelings for Samrat?

That irritated him; a lot!

Mita, meanwhile, unaware of the contrary, frustrated feelings in the man sitting by her side, turned to him in appeal.
